På natten i den rökiga festlokalen kommer jag liksom av en slump att hamna i samspråk med två psykarbetare, den ena vårdbiträde, den andra konstterapeut. Hon är en lite kvinna från Prestwick med manlig stämma och förlovningsring, han en australiensare med en fotografisk mask av sitt eget ansikte som han under samtalet upprepade gånger trär över sitt eget huvud Han påminner om en fågel utan vingar, med en väldig överkropp och ett kalnande huvud, likt en pingvin, medan ruset sätter honom i rörelse, vaggande av och an på sulorna som om han saknade ben.
The funniest thing, säger hon, is this guy with body dismorphic disorder Im working with just now. The thing is, you know... hon vrider ringen mellan tummen och pekfingret när hon talar ...is that his nostrils really are abnormally large. He's got the most insane nostrils I've ever seen, I mean when you look at him you think, man,that guy has got some large nostrils, some very large nostrils, yeah? Like looking down the barrel of a rifle, I mean they're really are abnormally large. Hon skrattar och slickar cigaretten hon rullat mot tungan. Well, see the thing is, that's not what's freaking this guy out, yeah? See, the guy has the weirdest nostrils, but you know what is bothering him? Hon skakar på huvudet. It's his ears. And there's really nothing wrong with his ears. His ears are fine. Perfectly normal. So here you have this man with these absurdly grotesque nostrils and a completely irrational paranoid obcession with his ears.
Whatabout them? frågar pingvinen.
Well, he thinks they stick out.
Do they?
He's had several operations. There's nothing wrong with his ears. Nothing wrong at all. It's just... Hon skakar på huvudet. You'd think it'd be his nostrils, if there was anything to go mad over, it should be the nostrils, hell, it would be perfectly normal to freak out about those nostrils. Things is though, he doesn't, he wants to rip his ears off, and that's why he is mad. That's the difference between the insane and the normal, that one choice, the ears rather than the nostrils.
